20 Iconic 1800s Style Fonts To Give Your Designs a Traditional Touch

, ,
  1. Brim Narrow

    Brim Narrow

**BRIM NARROW** *A DECORATIVE, LAYERED TYPEFACE* **This pack includes:** - All 8 layer styles that combine to produce almost unlimited style combinations. - A PDF specimen describing how to create each of the layer combinations shown above. Brim is inspired by antique woodtype and chromatic type from the 1800s. Its various styles stack together creating a variety of decorative combinations. Each layer can be assigned its own colour, resulting in a rich assortment of eye-catching results. The font began as a handful of letters created for a logotype. It became clear that it would make an excellent display typeface, so it was expanded to include all uppercase letters, numbers, European accents and more. Warm and tactile, Brim produces punchy headlines and decorative titles. Perfect for posters, packaging and logotypes. The name Brim accurately describes the expanded outer edge designed to produce its distinctive outlines. This overlapping structure couldn’t function correctly in wood or metal type; however for digital typography this system produces a more efficient solution for colour type, both in design and smaller file size, important for web typography. The tight-fitting extruded styles are designed to overlap, creating a solid platform for the letters to jump out from. Steeper than the traditional 45°, they emphasise the narrow design, enabling more words per line. **Notes & acknowledgements** At certain sizes, when light layers are stacked over dark layers, a faint outline may appear where edges abut. This is a rendering error in certain applications; however these ‘ghost’ lines should not appear when printing. It is recommended that your software’s trapping feature is on. If necessary, a hairline stroke can be applied to correct for screen use. Many thanks to **Dave Foster**, **Toshi Omagar**i, & **Terrance Weinzierl**, who generously gave their time to guide the design of this typeface.

  7. FHA Condensed French

    FHA Condensed French

FHA Condensed French One could speculate that FHA Condensed French probably started life as wood type for displays, headlines and posters. The exaggerated sharp serifs and condensed forms were not uncommon for that period. At some point, sign painters picked up Condensed French added their own character. At the end of the nineteenth century, Frank H. Atkinson included Condensed French in his samples of lettering for his book, ”Sign Painting, A Complete Manual.” This book became one of the definitive guides for signwriting and hand lettering. In 1999, Mike Adkins digitized Condensed to add to our Atkinson collection. For its re-release, Condensed French has been updated with more language support, ligatures, and OpenType alternates. It has true vintage character but still plays well in more modern designs. A font for all seasons, the condensed forms and sharp serifs fit in every layout from Wild West days posters and creepy film credits to Christmas ads and Mother’s Day cards. While I can’t really see FHA Condensed French as the font for phone aps or video game text, it will provide impact to logos, branding, and product labeling.

  9. Lawless font

    Lawless font

I started creating Lawless over a year ago, drawing it directly into adobe illustrator. I never finished it owing to the fact that I accidentally deleted the file. Yes, it did make me want to punch myself in the face—repeatedly. I was so pissed I canned the project.. Until now. I resurrected the idea but took it in a slightly different direction. Rather than uber clean lines, I decided to draw it with a pencil. Then let illustrator take the strain converting it to a font. Inspired by the early American wood type of the 1800's. It's bold and brash and is the ideal typeface to get that vintage wild west look and feel. Lawless comes in 4 different styles **Regular, Grunge, Spur** and **Shadow**. Easily mix and match them to get the look you're after. **The font includes** - Upper and lowercase characters - Numbers and punctuation - Symbols - Support for Eastern, Central and Western European countries - 4 Different styles If this font was a celebrity it would be more Clint Eastwood than Eminem. --- If you have any questions just ask. --- Check out my other fonts—http://bit.ly/1SqAL3l
